The Council of Ministers issued Resolution No. (334) on 25/6/1439 AH, established the Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Commission (NRRC) and enacted its Statute​. The NRRC  is tasked with overseeing the peaceful applications of nuclear energy and ensuring the protection of humans and the environment from any potential or actual radiological exposure

Objectives and Tasks of the NRRC:

  1. Regulate activities, practices, and facilities involving the peaceful use of nuclear energy and ionizing radiation.
  2. Protect humans and the environment from any actual or potential radiation exposure, including natural radiation exposure.
  3. Monitor and ensure the safety and security of these uses and compliance with nuclear safeguards.
  4. Fulfill the Kingdom's obligations under relevant treaties and agreements within its jurisdiction.

Jurisdictions and Responsibilities of the NRRC:

  1. Develop policies and regulations that ensure oversight of nuclear and radiological activities, practices, and facilities.
  2. Establish and verify regulations related to safety, security, and nuclear safeguards.
  3. Monitor the export, import, and handling of nuclear materials, nuclear-related items, and radioactive sources.
  4. Set necessary requirements for nuclear and radiological emergency preparedness.
  5. Regulate and inspect activities, practices, and facilities under its jurisdiction.
  6. Raise awareness regarding the risks of ionizing radiation.
  7. Cooperate with government agencies, similar regulatory bodies in other countries, and international organizations.
  8. Represent the Kingdom before the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and other international organizations related to its mandate and responsibilities.
  9. Any other tasks the Commission deems necessary to protect humans and the environment from the hazards of ionizing radiation.
