Nuclear Security
Nuclear security aims to prevent, detect, and respond to any theft, sabotage, unauthorized access, illegal transfer, or other malicious acts involving nuclear materials, nuclear-related items, radioactive materials, or associated facilities. Nuclear security encompasses:
- Security of nuclear and radiological facilities
- Security of nuclear and radioactive materials during transport
- Security of nuclear and radioactive materials during use and storage
The NRRC has established the National Technical Plan to enhance the nuclear security system and combat the illicit trafficking of nuclear and radioactive materials. This includes monitoring contaminated goods using advanced technical means for self-monitoring. These technical means have been implemented in several areas within the Kingdom, and relevant entities have been provided with operational technical specifications to adopt in their systems for monitoring illicit trafficking of these materials, integrating with the NRRC's Emergency Operations Center. Additionally, the NRRC has proposed regulations requiring certain factories to adopt technical monitoring methods according to the NRRC's requirements, linked to its Emergency Operations Center.
Non-Proliferation
Beyond monitoring nuclear materials, the NRRC is responsible for overseeing the import and export of nuclear-related items, which include substances, goods, technologies, software, or data connected to nuclear or radiological aspects, as well as dual-use materials with both nuclear and non-nuclear applications. Their use is subject to specific conditions. This oversight also extends to radioactive sources (including radioactive materials or radiation-emitting devices) and their licensing. It involves issuing licenses for nuclear and radiological facilities and activities across various fields after verifying compliance with safety requirements.
