The NRRC Organizes National Workshop on Nuclear Law
17 February 2025
The NRRC convened a National Workshop on Nuclear Law to present the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s comprehensive regulatory, legal, and operational framework governing nuclear activities.
The workshop focused on the core components of the national framework, which includes a set of policies, legislative measures, and technical regulations that are fully aligned with international standards. These components support effective regulatory oversight in the areas of nuclear safety and security, the national accounting and control system for nuclear material and related items, the national radioactive sources register, and procedures related to the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.
Additionally, the workshop reviewed several international legal instruments to which the Kingdom is a party. These include treaties, conventions, United Nations resolutions, and international codes of conduct. Within its mandate, the NRRC is responsible for ensuring that the Kingdom meets its international obligations under these instruments.
The workshop brought together representatives from a range of national entities, including the Ministry of Justice, the Public Prosecution, the Bureau of Experts at the Council of Ministers, the National Security Center, the Preparatory Committee of the Ministerial Committee for Administrative Organization, the Presidency of State Security, the Saudi Central Bank, the Ministry of Energy, the Standing Committee on Anti-Money Laundering, the state-owned Dhahran Nuclear Company, and other relevant stakeholders.
A key highlight of the event was the participation of Ms. Johnson, Director of the Office of Legal Affairs at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), who was joined by a team of experts specializing in nuclear law and international legal instruments. Their contributions provided valuable global perspectives and insights into international best practices.
This workshop reflects the NRRC’s ongoing commitment to strengthening national legal and regulatory capacities, promoting a robust nuclear safety and security culture, and enhancing cooperation with international partners.
