received H.E. Mr. Jassim Mohammed Al-Budaiwi

The Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Commission received H.E. Mr. Jassim Mohammed Al-Budaiwi, the Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), along with his accompanying delegation from the GCC Secretariat today. They were welcomed by Dr. Khalid bin Abdulaziz Al-Issa, CEO of the Commission, and other officials.

H.E. the Secretary-General was briefed on the Commission’s capabilities in regulatory laboratories related to the assessment of radiation levels in various environmental components and their relevance to nuclear and radiological emergency situations. He also reviewed the qualitative and quantitative identification capabilities of nuclear materials and related items, and how these efforts support national initiatives in alignment with international frameworks for non-proliferation and nuclear security.

His Excellency and the accompanying delegation visited the Nuclear and Radiological Emergency Operations Center at the Commission’s headquarters, where they were introduced to the Center’s capabilities in preparedness, response, and prediction of nuclear incidents. This included systems for continuous environmental radiation monitoring, early warning, and networks for detecting nuclear materials, radioactive substances, and contaminated items.

The two sides also exchanged views on Gulf-level cooperation in various aspects of nuclear and radiological regulatory work, particularly in emergency preparedness and response, nuclear security, and monitoring imports, exports, and transit of regulated nuclear-related items.
