he fourth day of the Nuclear Emergency Preparedness Conference commenced today with a specialized session entitled “Considerations for Ending a Nuclear Emergency, Returning to Normalcy, and Long-Term Response,” featuring a select group of international and regional experts and specialists.
The session was moderated by Gerd Dercon of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), while Mousa Al-Kaltham, Technical Officer at the Saudi Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Commission, participated on the Saudi side.
The session also featured a distinguished group of international speakers, including:
• Genaro Mariaca from the United Arab Emirates
• Albinet Franck from France
• Takuro Shinano from Japan
• Lucas Martiri from the Nuclear Energy Agency of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)
Also participating from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia were:
• Tariq Al-Shahrani from the Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Commission
• Fatima Damlakhan from King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology
The session aimed to explore the critical factors related to ending nuclear emergencies, mechanisms for a well-planned transition back to normalcy, and to discuss extended response strategies and their long-term impacts, thereby enhancing national preparedness and improving operational systems in this vital area.
